Merigar East is situated in the neighbourhood of a village called 23 August, in the province of Dobrogea of Romania, located between the towns of Constanta (35km) and Mangalia (10km).
It is the very south-eastern corner of Romania, only 20km away from the Bulgarian border. Distances to the most important cities are: Bucharest - 270km, Varna - 120km, Chisinau - 500km, Odessa - 580 km.
The Gar is situated in the middle of the fields, 3 km far from the village and only 1km far from the Black Sea coast. There are some airports in the region, but if you are travelling by public transport, you can take a train or a bus from Bucharest to Constanta and then take a bus or a microbus from Constanta to 23 August (direction Mangalia). There are also several direct bus shuttles from Bucharest to Mangalia (passing 23 August) each day.
If you are arriving from Varna, during the summer season there are buses or microbuses towards 23 August.
Coming from the east and north (Ukraine, Republic of Moldova, Russia), the best way is to take an overnight bus from Chisinau (Republic of Moldova) to Constanta or from Odessa (Ukraine) directly to 23 August.
From the village 23 August to the Gar (app. 3km), there is no available public transport. You can walk, have a ride by car with other Community’s members or use transportation organized by the local Gakyil (only during retreats!).
In case of flying to Bucharest or Varna, it is best to choose a flight arriving early in the day to avoid having to spend the night in the city.
By car, from Bucharest it takes approximately 3,5 -4,5 hours (depending on traffic). From Varna the lift takes 1,5 - 2 hours. Constanta airport is only one hour drive from the Gar.
If you can afford it, the best solution is to rent a car. If you are traveling onward by public transport, check available connections before you book a flight.

From Bucharest city and both airports (west direction) you go to direction of Constanta (motorway A2 and after its end - national road E60). If it is not necessary, don’t enter the cities (neither Bucharest nor Constanta), better take the ring road (Romanian “Centura”, see the picture). There is a lot of traffic, but it is much better than spending hours in the city's traffic jams...
In Constanta you have to follow the direction Varna and Mangalia (E87) till 23 August.
Arriving from north (Chisinau), east (Odessa) and Constanta’s airport you must go towards Constanta. Don’t enter the city, better take a ring road (Romanian “Centura” or “Varianta” – see the picture below) and follow the E87 road direction Varna, Mangalia till 23 August.
From the South
Coming from the south you will pass Varna and drive north towards Romanian border (road E87, direction Mangalia, Constanta). After you cross the Bulgarian – Romanian border (Durankulak / Vama Veche) follow the road until Mangalia and further - direction Constanta, until you reach the village 23 August (10 km from Mangalia).

USEFUL INFORMATIONS ABOUT MERIGAR EAST, 23 AUGUST VILLAGE AND THE SEASIDE
The Gar
Merigar East is situated between the village 23 August (3km) and the Black Sea coast (800m), in the middle of the fields, where there are no buildings at all, it is only open space! The Gar is situated between two seaside resorts (Costinesti and Olimp, 3 km far each). There are 2 beaches close to the Gar: the bigger one, with few restaurants serving Romanian traditional cuisine and local fish specialties and the smaller one, along the little fishermen’s village and beautiful cliff, almost wild, used mainly by local people and… Dzogchen practitioners. During the retreat we will provide an outdoor kitchen in the Gar (for campingers) and will offer the opportunity of buying simple but tasty meals prepared by our kitchen team. More details about the eating in the Gar later.
23 August village
The village is situated on the main road (Constanta – Mangalia). Even if it is located on the seashore it is not a typical seaside resort. People are very friendly, open and hospitable in a typical, Romanian manner. You can do your basic shopping in a couple of groceries (one of them is 24h open!) There is also post office (9am – 5pm), police station, one cash machine, 2 bus stops, few local bars and very well stocked pharmacy (7am – 9pm). There are no restaurants at all in the village!
The seaside’s highlights
Between Constanta and the Bulgarian border, there are many very popular summer holiday resorts. Merigar East is situated between 2 such ones: Costinesti and Olimp. In all those places you can find nice beaches with fine sand and small shells. The seaside resorts offer a great variety of restaurants, coffees, fast foods, terraces, window bakeries, fruit sellers and food stores. Summer weather is very hot and dry (average temperature for July and August is 25°C), also water in the Black Sea is quite warm!
Holiday resorts offer everything one needs for a good rest: hotels with different standards (from ** till *****), restaurants, bars, night clubs and pubs on the beach, discotheques as well as all kind of touristic services: boat, motor boat or yacht trips, parachuting, helicopter flights and daily excursions among the Romanian and Bulgarian coast.
Each resort has its own particular tourist frequenter, for instance in Costinesti you will find mainly teenagers, in Olimp, Neptun or Saturn – the whole families making vacation and in legendary Vama Veche, you meet all globetrotters of all nations having fun since early morning till…early morning! Mamaia resort offers summer fun for those, who don’t want to leave the city and have all summer seaside highlights on the spot: aquapark, boutiques and shopping malls, casinos and night life.
Few kilometers far from Merigar East there is a worldwide famous lake called Techirghiol, much more salty than the Black Sea and containing a special mineralized mud used for many rheumatic treatments. Also in Mangalia and many other holiday resorts in the neighborhood, you can find various sanatoriums, spa, treatment and massage centers.
Money
Local currency is RON (1 RON= 10 000 [old] Lei). The actual exchange rate is 1€ = 4.1 RON. In all holidays centers and small towns around (the closest is Mangalia – 10km) there are several exchange offices, banks and cash machines. In the village 23 August there is only one cash machine, but neither bank nor exchange office.

On the national road which links Constanta and Mangalia several buses and microbuses are passing every 10 minutes. There are also many bus shuttles between the seaside resorts. Taxi
In all touristic places you will find a lot of taxi drivers ready to do service night and day! Remember: ask the price before you enter and pay at the end of the ride! Bargain skills are always welcomed!
Internet
The internet connection in the Gar is very expensive. There is still no power grid therefore the wireless internet works only when the fuel generator runs. Please, be aware of that and don’t use internet during the webcast because it may disturb the webcast team and influence broadcasting of the live stream! However, every day after the teaching sessions, everybody will have the opportunity for public use of the internet.
The easiest way for managing the accommodation is a room renting in the village 23 August. It is not typical touristic site with many hotels and pensions but rather a village where you can rent a room in one of the villager’s houses, often sharing the space with the householders. Sometimes owners move out during the renting period, making the whole house available for the customers. There are different standards and prices according to the level of comfort, but even the most expensive rooms in the village are cheaper than those affordable in the seaside resorts (prices vary between 15 to 25 Euro /room/night).
For renting rooms in the village, please feel free to contact our fellow helperIuliana Ghita: ghitaiuliana(at)gmail.com, mobile: 0040 746716140 (Romanian or English).
Hotels and pensions on the coast
You can book accommodation directly in hotels or pensions along the coast. There are a great variety of standards: small pensions, bungalows, different hotels for the whole families or singles. In case you are interested in such opportunities you can check here: www.plaja.ro, www.litoralulromanesc.ro, www.laguna-tour.roor just search in internet under “Litoral Romania”. On the www.litoral.info.ro you can find more about what is worth to be seen at the Romanian Black Sea.
